SAR715 Support Pages: Firmware Upgrade

Why perform a firmware upgrade?

In essence, a newer firmware release will do one or more of the following:

  • fix bugs that were present in a previous firmware version;
  • add new features;
  • make improvements on existing features.

Therefore, it seems logical to upgrade to the latest firmware as and when it is released. However, this is not always the case and the other side of the argument should also be considered. If you are experiencing no problems with the workings of your router and you do not require any of the new features provided by the new firmware, then my advice would be to not upgrade. If, however, the current firmware is causing problems (such as disconnections) or you require new features offered by the new firmware (such as ZIPB) then consider the upgrade.

Where can I get the firmware?

The SAR715 downloads area on the Solwise website can be found here. However, the newest firmware files cannot be found here as they are only available to Solwise customers, and so are not available to everyone. You may join the mailing list for the SAR715 in order to be automatically alerted when a new firmware becomes available. Simply send a blank email to 715firmwarelist@solwise.co.uk to join the list. It will often be the case that you will have to email Steve directly for the firmware to steve@solwise.co.uk.

UPDATE (14 August 2003)
All firmware can now be downloaded directly from the Solwise website, without the need to email Steve.

What is the best method to use to upgrade the firmware?

With all due respect, the provided DSL Configuration Tool software is extremely temperamental and intermittent, and more importantly does not take account for an administrator password and LAN IP address other than the router's factory default. Therefore, where possible, I would avoid using it. Despite this, the web interface seems to work flawlessly, but this is not always an option. If the new firmware has a new boot code file, then you will not be able to use the web interface to upgrade. In this case, I would recommend making use of either of the two guides below - with thanks to machasm for the original guide, and to jadams for a recent addition based on machasm's method.
