SAR715 Support Pages: UPnP

What do I need to do in order to get UPnP working?

1. Ensure that the UPnP service is installed

By default, UPnP is not installed by Windows. Open the Windows Control Panel and select Add or Remove Programs. Under Windows Components, select Networking Services and then select Universal Plug and Play. Please remember that this only applies to Windows Me and Windows XP.

2. Ensure that UPnP is working

If UPnP is working correctly, then Windows will the IGD (Internet Gateway Device) under My Network Places. If it is not, then this device will not be displayed.

Why has Windows has not detected the IGD?

If at this stage UPnP is not working, then it is likely that you are using Windows XP with Service Pack 1. Before Service Pack 1 was released, there were few problems with Windows recognising the SAR715. However, SP1 patched a security hole, meaning that the port used by a UPnP device must be above 1024. The SAR715's default UPnP port is below 2000, and as a result, Windows does not recognise it. So, the UPnP port of the router must be changed, which can only be achieved with the CLI. The new settings must also be saved, and the router restarted in order for the new settings to take effect.

    system config save

    system restart

Restart Windows and the IGD should be detected.

UPDATE (14 August 2003)
It appears that the latest firmware version (1.21) has resolved most UPnP issues. Globespan Virata have recommended the use of port 2800 for UPnP.
